I have a couple old USN surplus Amplidynes. They were used on WWII ships to rotate the turrets of big guns, from what I understand. Driven by 3-phase AC motors, they were the stepper motors of the 40s. With an exciter coil, you give a small voltage in to change the generated voltage out. 300 Watts at 120 VDC, two sets of brushes for redundancy, they weigh a lot. I was going to build a windmill using the exciter coil as a variable input to keep the output constant with varying wind speeds. Not much wind around here, and so forth, so they sit. Maybe I will do like David suggests and drive one with the winch PTO (I don't have a belt pulley on my '53 B3 PW). All I need is a bunch of batteries to make a power back up. Probably be cheaper to buy (and run!) a small generator!
I anyone wants to buy one, with or without AC motor, let me know. How about $50 for the Amplidyne, plus shipping? Shipping will likely cost more than the generator.

Anyone ever think about electrifying a Power Wagon? That would be a neat project. You could carry a lot of batteries. Even so, range would be about 2 blocks! One of these days someone should at least hybridize a flat fender. That way you could keep the engine and the original condition of the truck intact. Maybe just a bunch of batteries and a motor to run the drive shaft(s) using an overriding clutch pulley or sprocket.
