The M37 never had a tach. This is how the instrument panel lays out:

BATTERY......SPEEDO......FUEL
......LIGHT..........LIGHT...
TEMP........HI BEAM.....OIL..

The LIGHT I'm referring to above is a little metal cup that has the light bulb behind it to illuminate the dash. The HI BEAM is a very small hole with a light behind it.

To the right of the instrument panel is a large diameter knock-out. If this is the hole you are referring to, it is for the optional heater duct that mates with an external duct to defrost the windshield. The duct work passes through this hole. The heater itself going on the drivers fender, and you'll see a similar knockout on the cowl in front of the drivers door.

As for hooking up a tach, you'd have to break into the ignition wiring to hook one up. Not an easy task since it is sealed for waterproofing.
