Jerry,

I had a similar sounding problem with my '49 Power Wagon. It would run for a little while, then cut out and die. After letting it sit for a while, it would crank right up.

At first I thought it was crud coming from the fuel tank, because I could see small pieces in the bottom of the carb float bowl. So I removed the tank, had it thoroughly cleaned at a radiator shop. Then I coated the inside with one of those gas tank coatings that you slosh around. I don't remember what brand.

After this, I still had trouble, so I installed an electric fuel pump. To get the best results, install it just a few inches forward of the tank. This way, the pump is sucking up relatively cool fuel right out of the tank. If it's next to the engine, there's still some chance the fuel will get hot and cause vapor locking. Anyway, whenever I feel the engine starting to cut out, I reach down and flip the pump switch on.....and no more trouble!

Good luck,

Matt
