Over This weekend I had to construct the apron from the driveway up 2' to the garage opening. Having just moved I couldn't find my tools. However in the corner was the new British pick and shovel WW2 that I bought in Ashville. So against my better judgedment I used them. At first it was hard work, then I got to thinking "Hey maybe these were used to build the Bridge on the River Kwai or may be a foxhole at Normandy on D-day. Off came the sweat shirt and I put my back into it. After awhile the rythmic sound of the pick biting into red Alabama clay and the chunk of the shovel clearing out the rocks seemed to dwarf my tiredness. The Dern concrete truck arrived about an hour early and we had to work even harder. Then it started to rain. One of those steady soakings. Well we even defeated the rain buy puting 2 x 4's in the ground and building a plastic sheeting barier ove the fresh concrete. It worked fine. Sunday morning dawned and the new drive was perfect. I wiped the mud off the pioneer tools and put them back on the wall. Now they mean something to me too. I don't think I will sell them, they are now part of the collection....Alabama Al
