Well Melissa, a nice modern truck makes good sense, is cheaper and actually gets gas mileage, and you can hear the radio.
But, with these old dogs you get something else very rewarding in the expensive bargain.

You can fix it with whatever you have in the kitchen hell drawer.

You can hear smell and feel all the operating parts of these things when driving therefore knowing the status of some impending mechanical disaster.

You actually can see your surroundings as you drive at 40 instead of 75 as we all do throughout the week.

You can put 2000 pounds of firewood on them and they don't care.

You have to drive with your arm out the window and they have those wonderful long lost wing windows.

You have something exclusive. Even though nobody admits to it, the occasional thumbs up from cars that fly by you is rewarding.

You don't have to worry about emissions checks or if the $1000 onboard computer will crap out 60 miles from home.

They're too slow and hard to drive so you don't have to worry about the neighbors or relations wanting to borrow your truck.

As you can't hear over the cacaphony of noise in them, your spouse is usually quiet.
I refer to it as mechanical acoustic perfume.
My wife does like the recognition when she's in it. Hasn't mastered driving it yet. Needs more biceps...

You relearn what Y turns are. (Cheaper than a membership at Bally's)

You soon understand what out of the seat on the brake pedal is, (crappy brakes by design)
therefore you drive more defensively.

Essentially it's an (old) thing with a lot of relatively important American history. It's an anachronism from another era. It's the care and feeding of a dinosaur that's still living. The satisfaction of tearing it down to the last bolt and rebuilding it. The it's mine and I don't care if anyone else likes it thing. Yeah it resides in the garage as it has value, and her leased Grand Cherokee sits out in the driveway.

I'll drive 80 mph tomorrow on a 600 mile biz trip, but today I drive 40 with a ton of firewood. *Nice blue toenail for my efforts....

Yeah, it's a guy thing. sak
