Jim:

Your memory is good. The PW's that came with the 4.89 gears also came with 7.50-16 tires but used a different wheel (CC # 1189378) than the "dually" type wheels on the WC 1/2 ton 4X4 (CC # 915056 & 921168). The difference is a greater offset on the WC 1/2 ton wheel, to the extent the inside edge of the dually wheel hits the outer ridge of the PW brake drum before the wheel center is flush on the hub. Tightening the lug nuts flexes the wheel center, eventually leading to failure and cracks around the dually wheel center. The solution is to trim perhaps 1/2" off the outside of the PW brake drums so the WC 1/2 ton wheels pass by the drum instead of rest on it. If you see PW brake drums with trimmmed (flat) outer edges, this is the likely reason.

The PW "750-16" wheel and the WC 1/2 4X4 "dually" wheel both use the same smaller side ring, CC # 580723. But the wheels the side rings attach to are different. The PW wheels stick out slightly further on the hub (have a slightly greater offset and track) than the WC 1/2 ton 4X4 wheels. Those Detroit engineers think of damn near everything!
