If you decide to go with commercial re-chroming, I learned one lesson with mine.
The threaded studs on the back of the plates are typically weakened by corrosion in these older pitted and corroded plates. The rechroming process restores the plates, but not these studs as far as renewing the metal in them.
When I got the plates back I tried to turn a die on the studs to enable me to use nuts to fasten them. A few of the studs cracked off.
If I had it to do over again, instead of tring to restore the threads on the weak ones, I would use the press on speed nut-like fasteners along with the special adhesive tape made for body moldings to hold them in place.
