I have discussed this with Eric before. I have not seen a pattern in the keys I have.

In the image, the top key is from my '47 WDX. It is marked "DPCD" and appears to be original. It fits the ignition, but will not even insert in the door lock. The door lock would accept a key shaped like the one on the very bottom.

The second key is from the ignition of a little newer '47 WDX parts truck I had. It also appears to be an original DPCD key (very worn). It fit the ignition but I don't recall trying it in the door. It will not fit the door of my current WDX. Notice how the grooves are completely different from the top key.

The third key is from my '51 B3PW. It is not original DPCD, but appears to be a very old replacement. It fits and unlocks both the ignition and door. Notice how the grooves perfectly match the second key.

The bottom key is from the ignition of a '48 B1PW I owned. It would not insert into the door lock of that vehicle. It would fit the door locks on a '62 W100 Town Panel I had.
