In your first pic, see the split washer on the end of the plunger? Same technology used on brake shoes? That was what was missing on mine. I had found the two halves when I had drained the oil, before driving it. They had been through the wringer, so to speak. I made a new one from a soft washer and crimped it well. It ought to last as long as the first one, eh?

Check yours, see if it is wearing enough to pull the plunger through. Replace if worn. If not worn, but loose, tighten it up with water pump pliers.
