If I only had one pair, I would put them the back for most driving, since I prefer to have the back end of the truck stay in the back when decelerating on something slippery. But for serious snow, assuming you have 4WD, you'll need them on the front too. When I only had one pair of single chains for my M35 I managed to get out of my place in late fall by putting them on the front only. I had to do that or I'd have no steerage, going uphill on a narrow, icy, slanted road. The truck sort of went crab-like on the hairiest part of it, with the rear end trying to slide off the edge, but if I'd put the chains on the rear, the 8 tires in the rear point straight ahead would have just pushed the front end off the road at the first curve or slant.

Worst case, in a tough spot with only one pair of chains, you have to put them on the front for going up hill and then move them to the rear for going down hill. That's no fun, but when you compare it to death, it's not that bad.
