m37 timing problem

I just had the 230 rebuild set everything like the military manual said. I put the timing gear dots together between the crank and camshaft. Placed the oil pump shaft slot parallel with the bolt holes with the narrow side of the slot
towards the mounting flange then turned the gear one tooth counterclockwise then installed next put the distributor in rotor facing 7 o'clock put number one plug wire there then 53624 clockwise. Then tring to start it rolls over and back fires out the carb. But if u take plug wire number 1 and put it where number 6 is then finish the firing order which would make 180 degrees out according to the book. With it like this it wants to run like it hitting on some cylinders but won't take off. Any suggestion I can't figure it out
