I worked in a welding shop with an old guy who was welding mallible cast with the mig and that is ok for malliable so I tryed it on some grey cast to experiment. It will stick if the cast is preheated almost red in the flat position but overhead with contamination I bet it would just ball up and fall into the nozzel.
The problem with welding cast is the shrinking of the deposit metal compared to the cast that is ridged. Nickel works because it won't shrink as much.
Use short beads of no more than 1/2" and peen the weld as soon as you can get your hood up, let it cool before you add the next 1/2".
