I would braze it if I had it out and stripped. Brazing is stronger than cast iron if done right. I have tried the wire-feed welder on scrap castings and it runs a nice bead. As for how well it adheres and whether it causes more cracks, I don't know. Maybe I should take a double-jack to an old pipe fitting and then try to weld the pieces back together and see how it works.
If I ever do take that tranny out, I'm sure it needs new bearings throughout, so it'll be a complete tear-down. If you saw the rest of the truck, though, you'd know why there's a limit to how much work I'll put into it. I mostly just want the winch to work so I have a fighting chance of unsticking myself if go out and get stuck in the snow or slide off the road.
