My old neighbors in Everett who used to have the "Round Top Ranch" near where the rest area is now always said Leavenworth was a real nice town back when it was a railroad town, but they couldn't stand it after they turned it into that Bavarian-themed tourist trap. 1922 would be right around the same time as they moved from the old 3-mile long Cascade tunnel to the new 7-mile tunnel, which was mainly motivated by the big snowslide in 1910 that swept the train off the tracks at Wellington. Those projects must have been the last major investments made on that line. I recently read somewhere that Amtrak has started up passenger service from Seattle to Leavenworth, to bring more tourists in, so either they let the people off over on the other side of the valley and bus them into town, or the spur track is still in place.
