Actually they are not the same. The M37 should have a NP420 trans. The 54 PW should have the "After" non synchro trans. They are interchangeable. The M37 NP420 trans has the same bolt pattern as the earlier PW trans. So it can be used in the 54 PW. I just did this same swap last summer on my truck.
Remember that the PW NP420 trans does not have the same bolt pattern as the earlier PW non-synchro trans. It require a different bell housing for the PW NP420 to be used in an earlier PW.
