Why do we keep expecting famous people to be saints?

Look, the man was paid to tell jokes and interview interesting people. He did a good job of it for a long time. We have other men who are paid to hit baseballs or sing songs. That's their job. They get millions of dollars for it because they're better at it than anyone else. Where does it say that they're also supposed to be moral examples to American's youth, or even that they have to be nice to their wives?

If you have some guy who's paid to drive a truck or paint houses, so long as he does his job, we don't much are what he does when he's off the clock. So why do we always expect these sports and entertainment figures to be extra-nice guys as well as being extra talented at whatever their particular talent is?

My relationship with Johnny Carson consisted of me watching him tell jokes and interview people on TV. I liked the show he put on. That's enough for me. I don't care if he was a jerk off the set any more than I'd care if the guy playing in the band or running the camera was a jerk off the set.
