It was always the reverse up here Sam. When the 89 Cummins came out...there were Huge waiting lists for them. Good luck getting anything but a bare bones work truck. All the farmers were installing Mitsubishi 6's in their P/U's back in those days & I guess because fuel was always WAY more expensive in Canada...the 6cyl Diesel was king. People bought lots of gas engine fords but even though the 7.3 hung in there not too bad...they got 30% worse fuel economy.
Later into the late 90's & 2000's...once they came out with the more refined Super Duty trucks I guess in 99, they became more popular.
The only exception were the Crewcab trucks.
Guys that needed a Crewcab...well, Dodge didn't make one & the 6.2 & 6.5 GM diesel was pretty much the biggest boat anchor that GM ever built.
I'm guessing it was the fuel economy issue?
