I’m sure the emission laws are a large factor in change in clearance values over the years. Smog laws never remain the same…the belt is constantly be tightened. The Jeep 4.0L L6 is a prime example. It was terminated in-part due to the inability to meet upcoming Federal standards. As David mentioned below the older engines were built on equipment that was never designed to hold such tight tolerances. In the case of the 4.0L the cost to retool the block line and redesign the combustion chamber were simply too high. It was cost effective to (much to the chagrin of Jeep enthusiasts) simply replace the engine with the 3.8L that is built on newer equipment with plenty of production capacity.
