I think the same way as you do, David. My motivation goes back to experience with this very process. We used to pull the head, drop the pan, loosen up the rods, add new rings. While we were there we would usually "Plasti Gage" the crank or at least loosen up the main caps and pull a couple of bearings out to see if there was significant wear. If there was, we would slip in new ones. I ran several engines for a long time after doing that process. And we seldom did a valve job without at least doing the rings.
