I'm with you on this one Copey. I've rebuilt a lot of diffs and never found one where you can't move the pinion in or out relative to the ring gear. In almost all cases this is achieved with shims behind the bearing outers with pre-load being achieved with either shims or a crush type spacer between the inners. There was a post I think on the last forum showing a badly worn crown-wheel - that could only happen if the crown-wheel to pinion relationship is wrong and you must be able to adjust so that doesn't happen.
