Nick, the sender unit has the float. The fuel pickup tube stops short of the bottom of the tank so it doesn't pick up any garbage and it does not have a strainer. The pickup tube is soldered inside the female fitting and that is soldered into the top of the tank. Your fuel line to the pump screws into that fitting. There are ways to fit a new pickup pipe into the tank without soldering as long as you get the right bulkhead type fittings. I have seen tanks where the pickup pie was clogged/rusted and the soldered fitting snapped off/damaged. There have also been reports on this and other sites of people getting their tank renewed and finding the pickup pipe clogged.
