The drum retaining rings prevent wear on the drum and winch housing by the keys. Notice there is not one on the passenger side of the drum. When the rear PTO shaft is in use, the the drum shaft turns and keys ride against a hard surface to prevent any wear on the drum and housing. If the end of the keys become nicked or broken off, they still cannot dig into the drum/housing.
