That's always been my take on synthetics.

The car's that come with them are usually Viper's, Corvette's, Porsche, etc. Engines designed to run hard and fast. The 6.1L SRT HEMI comes with Mobil 1, the regular version get's dino juice.

Modern conventional oils are far better than what these engines used new. Only time I might consider running synthetic in one would be if you were doing lots of idling or slow crawling where the wear and tear on the engine is disproportional to the mileage. Even then you could just change the oil based on time vs mileage.

I do like synthetics in gear boxes, transfer cases, etc. The improved flow characteristics mean it flows better in cold weather, generates less heat, and lubricates better. Plus the additive package is usually more robust and set up to last longer.
