Their outrage attracted little sympathy from the rest of the world, then they lost the war. Our military has never renounced the use of shotguns, we use them today, but did restrict their use in WWII to the Pacific theater of war - the reason is open to speculation. The attached a recent-ish Army position statement, which they have to do every time they want to buy some cool new shotgun and some Congressman starts with that whole "they're against the Geneva Convention" thing.
