The vacuum leak is letting so much air that the idle circuit of the carb can't catch up. It is probably the only thing that ever was wrong.
Stick a golf tee or anything that won't get sucked in, then wrap with tape. Or a piece of hose with bolt stuck in, and a hose clamp. A backfire might blow a loose plug out, and your problems will start all over again.
