The reasoning certainly is true on inactive parts that were meant to be turned. I have seen it with front u-joints wearing out long before the rear ones, due to the hubs being on "free". This, no doubt, is why the manuals recommend engaging the hubs periodically for a short time. Maybe this is why four wheel drive vehicles were originally intended for use in the military and in off-road conditions. The idea probably was never conceived that 90% of the vehicles racing around on the US highways would eventually be 4x4 of one kind or another. All of these fat, pasty, lazy,sugar coated kids should get back home and play with their electronics. :)
