They usually can be reassembled to fit on either side, or drive toward front or rear. BUT, the driven gear on the PTO MUST be compatible with the drive gear on the transmission. If it's helical gears, which way do the angle? The shape and depth of the gears is critical. Even the number of teeth on the gears is critical. Even NP435 transmissions are not all the same.
