I will agree with you that chain saws are temperamental no matter who made them. I think the process of trying to pack the maximum power into the minimum weight means they aren't necessarily as reliable or easy to start as larger engines. Plus, they naturally get abused -- they're left out in the rain (or used all day in the rain), they inhale dust, sometimes someone might not put enough oil in the gas, they get dropped, people back their M35 up onto them, and so on.

I think you are right about them enforcing a pricing structure rather than territories. I still think this is an old-fashioned way of retailing and I'm not sure it's going to benefit them in the long run. Stihl could charge the same wholesale price to all their dealers, if they wanted to, like the auto companies do, but if one dealer wanted to move high volume with thin margins, why not let them. There'd still be others that charge more but are more convenient or provide better service.
