... I can't even buy one. Their website point to five local "dealers", two of whom deny that they are Stihl dealers. One of the others is vaguely aware that maybe she has heard that they sometimes sell chainsaws, but she will need to ask the owner about it, and he's away for two weeks.

The final two actually have some Stihl pictures around (now we're getting somewhere), admit to being dealers (better and better), admit to knowing about chainsaws, but wait, no, we don't actually carry any in stock - they're "special order" you see - and that MS 361, we don't have that, can't get it, never heard of it, it's been discontinued... and why don't you go away?

Stihl may have protected their "pricing structure", but they also seem to have cleverly protected themsleves from any possibility of any sales as well.

The Internet is the the way a lot of people want to buy most things these days, and they have "protected" themselves against those sales as well. Brilliant business plan. We'd better all start taking Chinese lessons at this rate.
