I'm in the same boat looking to replace my daughter's 5 year old laptop. I'm trying to decide whether to buy something new or upgrade her existing her Dell Latitude D610 running Windows XP. Her laptop is primarily used for surfing the web, email, Facebook, downloading and listening to music.

I'd like to try a MAC, I have heard great things about Apple, but my budget is $500 for new. Since the MAC was out of my price range I have been looking at Dell, Lenovo, Acer, and Asus laptops. All of these have some kind of offering with a 15" display, running the new windows 7, with 4 Gb of ram, and substantially bigger hard drives than my daughter's current 30 Gb disks. I'm noticing a lot of Christmas specials too. I'm looking at the maufacturer's site, and other online retailers like Newegg, Amazon, Circuit City and Best Buy.

My alternative is to buy more RAM for her existing laptop, and install a larger drive, and try to get another year out of it. Between the ram and new hard drive I would be spending $100 - $200, so buying a new laptop for $500 seems like a better idea. I'll let you know if I come across any good deals between now and Christmas.
