Wow... I can finally contribute to the forum in a positive way.... SO... what do you want to do with said new computer? Most computers these days are way more powerful than the average user needs. If you are buying a new machine it will most likely be a PC or MAC, which means two operating systems. Windows or Leopard. Macs pretty much come as is.. and you don't have to decide what you want. PCs come in a variety of configurations. Not sure of your needs or knowledge, however a basic run through of components my prove useful:
1. hard drive. This is where you store stuff.. (Bed of truck) so if you have media (music, movies, etc) you need tons of space (1-2 ton truck), if not, surfing the internet, and running normal software doesn't take much(commuter car). Laptops usually have somewhere between 40gb - 500gb of space.
2. Processor. This is the power (engine) behind the machine. Its speed is more like HP.
3. RAM. This is a little tricky to explain, but its more equivalent to the drive train and should be thought more of torque… It’s more important than some people think. (If you are getting a PC with Vista or Win7, get as much as you can afford >2GB) There is usually a limit of space (2 slots) so if you want to start small, get a large chip in one slot, and leave the other open for expansion.
4. Screen. In a laptop, there is usually a correlation with screen to battery life and weight… The bigger the screen the more the thing will weigh, and the shorter the battery will last. Pending your needs, I usually suggest getting a smaller one (~14in) and using an external monitor at your primary use spot (desk). But if you like to float around the house/garage, then maybe its better to have a larger screen attached.
5. Bells and whistles… the sky is the limit.

Feel free to email me if you would like further details.
