The winch project grows (in two parts)

Okay, I got the winch out, with much torching of things, and it's in the shop for a thorough overhaul. In order to get it out, I had to first remove the drive shaft, and in order to do that, since the sliding parts of it no longer slide, I had to unbolt the two pillow blocks that carry the long section. At that point, It was pretty clear that the drive shaft was not going to be very usable. Of the 4 U-joints, 2 were junk, both sliding joints were rusted in place, the the pillow blocks were shot. All in all, this rear gear box setup was a pretty clever idea that didn't quite work.

Rather than build a new drive line and reconstruct that mess, I'm going to just run the winch the normal way. So, my first question is can I take the PTO apart and run the output shaft out the front (it's now running out the back) or is this some non-standard PTO he put on? The control rod sticks out both ends, but the driven shaft only sticks out the back. There's a cap on the front side, where you would think the shaft would come out. I assume I can have an ag equipment dealer make up a suitable drive shaft at that point. It should be nice and simple, with only 2 U joints and no pillow blocks.

The second part is funkier, but still has less funk than my original setup. I'd really like to use that cool little gearbox, so how about if I drove it off of the transfer case? Does the brake drum stay coupled to the input shaft when the T-case is in neutral? If not, my idea won't work, but if so, it should be a lot simpler than what I have now. It's okay if it's engaged all the time, since the "16-B" gearbox has a neutral position. That would give me two PTO-driven outputs in the rear, that could be used for all sorts of things -- maybe a generator and an air compressor for a handy mobile power source. The M35s have a special transfer case PTO, but I've never seen such a thing for an M37. Maybe there is one.
