The steel gear is black colored and might be made of sintered powdered iron, thus softer than steel and would hold oil well. It'll be good enough for me on this truck, with all the other stuff that's screwy about the whole setup.

The little gearbox is a Dana/Spicer "16-B". It looks like it was originally stamped "16-A", but the "A" was then over-stamped with a "B". It has two control levers that each turn a rod (not push a slider), one on each side. I'd be curious to know more about it. Somebody did a fair bit of work to put it in, but it's a tight squeeze for all the drive shafts and controls, and the driveline going from it to the winch has two very sharp U-joints near the gear box, two pillow blocks carrying the shaft up to the front, and then two more U-joints, at more reasonable angles, near the front. No attempt was made to equalize the angles or phasing of the shafts but it was obviously adequate for driving and wearing out a winch.
