For some reason, probably laziness and not wanting to change chucks, I'm in the habit of using the 3-jaw chuck and assorted shim stock to get a centerless shaft centered. I should learn to do it the right way. This will be a good one to practice on because it doesn't go very fast.

It does look like the steel gear I have on hand is the right one so I should be able to rebuild this without spending a lot of money. I think the steel gear was only $40, which is a lot less than the $350 they get for a bronze one. It's mighty sloppy on its shaft too. I hope all the wear is in the bronze part and not the shaft. I'm glad the worm is still good. No doubt the drive shaft bearings are bad, but they should be standard parts.

If only I'd known 30 or 40 years ago when they were using it to set up circus tents at the Puyallup Fair, I would have gone and packed it full of the famous corn head grease while nobody was looking, and then I wouldn't have this problem.
