David. Is this an LU4 winch or some other kind?
Normally the bull gear is held in place on the shaft by a square key about 2" long. You usually have to pull the drum off one end, remove the worm, and pull the bull gear and shaft out the end of the gear housing. But you will definitely have to have the winch out of the bumper to do all of this. You need to find an exploded parts view.
