Inflating split rims is one of those things that most all of us get away with most all of the time. It's like using a chain saw while wearing shorts, using a lathe without wearing goggles, or shooting a rifle without checking the barrel. There's almost never a problem. But then there's always the story of the guy who ended up in a world of hurt, even though he's been doing it that way for years and never had a problem before.
