The more I looked at it, the more I convinced myself that the little aluminum bypass housing and the radiator outlet elbow are both connected to the pressure side of the water pump, and the suction side is connected only to the block where it's bolted up directly. So, that means the hot water goes into the bottom of the radiator and the cooled water goes into the top of the engine via the thermostat, which is exactly the opposite of how I always assumed it was. That also means that the heater water gets pumped through the fitting atop the bypass housing, goes through the heater, and gets dumped into the back end of the head, which is also the opposite of how I thought it would be. I guess I was still thinking in terms of the circulation of a thermosiphon system, where the hot water comes out the top of the engine and the cool water goes into the bottom. But this makes sense since it puts the coolest water into the hottest part of the engine.

I guess I've never seen a 230 without the pipe fitting on the bypass housing, even though many of them also have a pipe fitting on the radiator U pipe. There must have been some cross over in production while they used up old pipes or something. This truck has a home-made radiator pipe, so no threaded fitting on it.
