When the engine is cold, the thermo allows coolant to circulate through the by-pass. The correct thermo has a cup that moves upwards into the thermo housing to gradually close off the by-pass as the coolant warms and the thermo opens. I believe the replacement 155 with the rubber "O" ring seals off the by-pass completely allowing the thermo to function as a modern day thermo only. This allows the engine to warm faster.
