I should probably give you a little additional background. I have been limping my t case along for about two years, the rear output has considerable play in it. I have tried tightening the yoke nut but it doesn't help, I am not familiar enough with the case to know why yet. I have a spare t case that I am planning on rebuilding and installing this winter. I am betting this is the problem but I also thought the rear diff was a little hot, I checked my wifes jeep 4 door which is lighter and has 4.10 gears and the rear diff doesn't even top 100 degrees on a day with similiar temps (65 degrees). My diesel tow rig without a load doesn't even get 5 degrees above the ambient temp. The truck seems to coast fine, if I press the clutch it coasts fine and will roll on the slightest slope. The diesel engine even with only 105 hp will push the truck to the 2500 rpm rev limiter all day long up any hill (at 40 mph) and it revs to the rev limiter so quickly in any gear other than 4th that it rarely produces more than 1-2 psi of boost before I have to shift, I could probably use the 4.89 gears or bigger tires (my favorite option). So really the only indication of additional drag is the higher boost and EGT and I have not really had the pyrometer installed all that long. Mostly I am just curious if anyone else has measured the diff temp and if 140 to 150 is normal I think maybe the move to sythetic oil is a very good idea. Also I noted the t case gets as hot or hotter than the differential.
