there used to be gauges for each gear set so if you had a tamdem you had two and if you had a single axle you had one > the idea behing temp gauges was to monitor the heat > so you say heat but running unloaded would naturaley be lower but undre EXTREME loads as in mountain country and quarry work at actual ring would flex from thrust and run up againt a snub block or deflector > this stop in place on the ring prevents it from flexing to the point of breaking and at that stage the oil heats rapidliyand aids the driver in the temp rise > also a low oil sit2tion would raise temp and so would a bearing that is about tp puke out and yes i am typing this in my snuggie ~ Copey 140 to 180 is the normal op temp
