I don't think mixing and matching parts matters as long as you are saving a truck from going via scrap to China.
1st series boxes seem to be easier to find than 2nd series (and maybe even 3rd series since most later trucks were bought by businesses and typically saw hard lives). Fenders are a different story. The 1st series are much harder to find than the 2nd/3rd series. There is a nice looking box with fenders currently on ebay. ebay auction #110450289125.
And, of course, there are people reproducing the first series box.
It looks like the cards are stacked in favor of going with a correct 1st series box.
