I hope to have a look at the 4.89 set he has. Apparently they were used hard, and for a long time. He said that the mismatch in ratios put too much stress on them and all but wore the 4.89s out. Not only was he suprised to find that this axle assembly did not have the 5.83 ratio that he is used to seeing, but he was also suprised to find that the 4.89 set has smaller teeth and appears weaker by design than the 5.83.

I verified that the pinion he has takes a large bearing at the gear end, and a double bearing at the stem end, so a Power-Wagon 5.83 set should be a direct swap.
