The original question was if siping would "improve performance on wet pavement". Experience shows it certainly does.
The thread migrated to ice. "No tire that is good on ice"? If I knew the old Goodyear F32 Winter Radial was still in production, I would disagree with you. That was a remarkable tire. I avoided a head on collision with another (drunk?) driver who was coming at me in my lane. I was doing around 50 mph in a '68 Ford station wagon and waited until the last minute to swerve to avoid hitting him. I went into his lane and around him and back into my lane without losng traction.
Anyway, siping WILL make a tire that is not "good on ice" perform a little better. It's worth it.
