Isn't .018 end gap kind of much? .007 sounds more familiar. Yup, just checked my 35-52 Motors manual, .007 at the tightest portion of travel. usually low in the bore, about 2" up from lowest travel. Book doesn't say, but I think the wear limit is about .015? Anybody?

But I still think you ought to try checking the cam timing before blaming rings. PITA as changing timing is, it's easier than changing rings.

But hey, how does it run? Blowby?
