Another reason, down the road, for installing an off-brand small block Chevy V-8 instead of the Mopar 318 or 360 is that it will be much easier to install a Ranger Overdrive. Ranger OD's are available in stock configuration for Chevys and look to be pretty much a bolt-in operation without having to shorten the transmission input shaft, as is required with a NP 435 (and perhaps a NP 420). Though brute, Dodge NP transmissions have too much "stick out" to butt up fully against the back of a Ranger OD without getting some of that magnificent length lopped off. Sometimes shorter (read "sufficient") IS better, especially when seeking full penetration.

A separate concern once the above problem is solved is distance available between the Ranger OD and the divorced transfer case. If the intermediate drive shaft is shortened 7-3/8 inches to accomodate the Ranger OD, there may not be enough room remaining between the Ranger OD and t/c to install it easily. Drive line angles will be increased, too. Factors, factors, too many factors !!! :<>
