The input shaft and bearings of the 3 spd are rated for only 300 or so ft-lb. Just imagine the gear reduction of the 4spd times the motor: maybe 1000-2000 ft-lb. I'll guess the 3 spd will fail quickly. I'd spend the time and money looking for the following:
A Ranger overdrive from Advance Adapters for $1495 which has a ratio of 0.73 and will drop rpms to 2550 at 65
Bigger tires, maybe 13.00R20 or 14.00R20 Michelins at a DRMO auction, I've heard of 16.00R20s from HEMTTs going for less than $10 each!!! The 16.00s will drop rpms to 2160 and even the 13.00s will drop things to 2400. I think anything in this range will be acceptable for your motor; the Ranger is the main thing. I don't think a 3 spd installed forwards or backwards behind a NP435 with 6.69 1st gear will last long behind a "mildly built Big Block".
