Once you take the rod cap off, look at the bearing and journal. If both are smooth you are in good shape, if not, that might be the problem.

Buy some plastic gauge from NAPA to use to determine the rod clearance. You take a piece a 1/2 long, place it on the bearing surface, reconnect and torque to specs. Remove the cap and compare the plastic to the paper gauge to determine the clearance. If more than .001, you buy shim stock or you can use paper, tinfoil, etc. cut to the bearing size and place between bearing and cap. This is to take up any clearance needed. Even if the journal/bearing is a little rough looking or has circular ridges, you can still follow the above process untill you acheive the clearance needed.

If you spun a bearing due to lack of oil, you can clean the bearing material off the journal using emery cloth, then polish the journal with krocus cloth, buy new bearings and repeat the adjustment procedures above.

To ensure you get an even cut across the journal, use a one inch wide tape measure tape and place the cloth between it and journal. The tape will easily bend, lay flat as you move it in a polishing motion across the journal, rotating around it every few cuts. These methods are not fast, but get the job done cheap.

Once you have the pan off, you may as well check all rod/main bearing clearance.
