I had to do this on my 03 Ram last fall. Pauls procedure is correct, it just does not mention that to get to step one takes about 6 hours!
As the picture shows, when you get the heater unit out of the truck you will be looking at the inside of the firewall, a sight not seen by many vehicle owners any more!
The actual replacment of the core takes about 3 minutes, if you take your time, play with the dog and grab another swallow from your beer.
Then you have to put it all back together, remembering where all those screws went and remembering to connect all the electrical plugs that get unplugged. At least the plugs are all different enough that you cant screw up and plug the wrong things together. About a month after I replaced my core the blend door motorwent south. I dont have the fortitude needed to pull it apart again a second time to fix that. I am thinking of trading the truck in in December so I think I can live with it until then.
