.....personal story: We had to put "Buck" to sleep. Did so without "Murphy" being there. Afterwards, Murphy stayed outside & barked for DAYS sort of calling for Buck cause she didn't know where he was. Few years later, had to put Murphy to sleep. We brought in "Bailey" later to see Murphy in her little Vet prepared dog casket and Bailey walked SLOWLY up to Murphy (who was spotless and beautiful as she lay in her little open casket) and the strangest thing, Bailey sniffed a bit and slowly walked backwards about 5 feet knowing that Murphy was now gone. The next week or so Bailey seemingly mourned around the house that Murphy was gone. It was like she knew and understood.
So make sure that your older Pooch is there.
