Step one is to point the rotor straight ahead, then pull the dist. DO NOT crank the engine, and you can drop the dist back in with the rotor straight ahead again, it should start again.

Use a bench vise to hold the dist body while you work inside. Or maybe drop it into the bed post hole.

It's hard to get a short that only make it run rough, not dead dead dead. But it may be possible- I had one once that would idle fine, but as the vacuum advance pulled the breaker plate around, it would short. What a governor! Perhaps tigtening the nut twisted the strap to ground?

Mine was FUBAR the day I bought it, the insulator parts where the bolt goes through the dist wall were bad.

So, yeah, you may have a problem.
